Virtual assistants have virtually catapulted to the forefront of modern small business operations in the past few years, making their presence known all across the world. For many business owners, this is a true blessing. Virtual assistants require no on-location office space or equipment, they are generally very efficient at what they do, and they provide a wide range of services to meet anything you may require. Of course, everything comes with a downside, and believe it or not there are some situations when you may not want to hire a virtual assistant for your business. Depending on your personal preferences, virtual assistants don’t always provide the benefits you may have heard about from your business colleagues.

First of all, if you are the type of person who likes to micromanage every single aspect of your business, you might not have a need to hire a virtual assistant. In fact, doing so may just end up wasting both of your time. Virtual assistants typically work best when they are given a task or a set of duties and then left alone to handle it in their own way. If you have very rigid guidelines for how you want everything to be done, you won’t be giving your virtual assistant enough lee way to inject his or her own opinions and expertise into the project. 

If you’re a micromanager, a virtual assistant won’t help you out because you’ll still try to keep your finger directly on the pulse of everything that happens in the business. Virtual assistants are a great option for business owners who prefer to delegate some of their tasks to a trusted worker who they can count on to get the job done right. This helps evenly distribute the workload and can reduce a lot of working stress for the business owner.

Second, a virtual assistant may not be the best option if you are in a tight spot financially. While they can help increase business for your company and eventually help bring in more revenue, virtual assistants do not work for free. If you don’t have much capital to begin with, you might be better off pushing through with your own labor until you are more secure on your bottom line. 

You can also never be sure that you will strike gold on your first choice for a virtual assistant. Although the nature of the profession lends itself to individuals who are more organized, and capable of handling anything, there are still people who work as virtual assistants who are fairly inept, or at least inexperienced when it comes to a lot of business matters. Therefore, if you only have enough money to give it a go one time, either hold off until you’re more financially stable or get a recommendation from a friend or colleague whom you trust. That’s the best way to avoid disappointment all around. You get what you want, and your virtual assistant gets paid. Everybody’s happy.

  1. If I could just share to you a little tip, there’s this freelancing site ( that have a “10 hour trial” thing. You can hire a virtual assistant and test their ability on 10 hours of work. If they perform well on that first 10 hours, then you can now hire them for a full-time or part-time of VA position.
    I find it effective and I think it will lessen or even avoid making mistakes on hiring a VA above. To learn more, you could check this blog out. They’ve got lots of tips.

  2. Good article. I’m especially happy that you’re addressing the “micromanaging” piece as it’s a major factor in client dissatisfaction. If a client cannot let go of the need to totally control the process, they’ll never feel the relief a great VA (or anyone else for that matter) can provide them. Further, if they’re unable to release the ‘bigger picture’ and insist on providing only task level details, they’ll only receive task level support which again provides little relief.
